Learning to Think Like a Golfer

Practice Day at Golfclub Hohenpähl

Earlier this June, I had the pleasure of hosting a full-day golf course management and strategy session at my home base, Golfclub Hohenpähl, here in Bavaria. With ten engaged and curious golfers joining the group, it turned into one of those special days that remind me why I love coaching.

While swing mechanics often steal the spotlight, the truth is that smart course management is one of the fastest ways to lower scores — without changing your swing. This practice day was all about helping players make better decisions on the course, learn how to build a round, and manage risk more effectively.

We spent most of the session out on the course, walking through real-game scenarios. Some of the key points we focused on included:

  • Choosing the right target off the tee — not always aiming for the flag, but selecting a line that suits your shot shape and avoids trouble.

  • Reading lie, slope, and wind conditions before committing to a shot.

  • Understanding the value of "playing away from trouble" and accepting a safe par over a risky birdie.

  • Knowing when to be aggressive and when to play smart — based on your strengths, not emotions.

  • How to approach par 5s strategically — including when to lay up and when to go for it.

It was great to see the "aha" moments throughout the day — when someone adjusted their game plan and immediately saw the benefit. For some, it was choosing a hybrid off the tee instead of a driver; for others, it was simply learning to commit to a decision with more confidence.

But beyond the technical side, what stood out most was the camaraderie and shared curiosity. Everyone brought their own experience, questions, and mindset to the group, and it made for a really open and thoughtful atmosphere.

We wrapped up the day the Bavarian way — with a cold beer and a hearty sausage. A fitting end to a day full of learning, good shots, and even better company. Days like these reinforce that golf is as much a mental game as a physical one. And when we learn to manage our way around the course with intention, the game starts to feel a lot more in control and a lot more fun.

Looking forward to hosting more strategy-focused golf coaching days like this in the near future.

See you out there,
Jonas
